The Best Advice I’ve Ever Received as a Diabetic

“You’re not your numbers.”
This sentence changed everything for me. Living with Type 1 diabetes means constantly monitoring blood sugar levels, insulin doses, and countless numbers that can easily feel overwhelming or even define our mood and self-worth. But I learned that my identity is so much more than a glucose reading.

Here are 3 pieces of life-changing advice I’ve received from doctors, friends, and fellow diabetics that helped me regain control and peace of mind:

1. Focus on How You Feel, Not Just the Numbers

Doctors often remind me that numbers are tools, not judgments. When you focus too much on the numbers, you risk losing sight of your body’s overall well-being. Instead, learn to listen to how you feel—your energy, mood, and symptoms. These are equally important signals that guide your care.

2. Build a Support Network That Understands

Diabetes can feel isolating, but you don’t have to face it alone. Talking with friends, family, or other people living with diabetes provides comfort, advice, and perspective. Fellow diabetics especially understand the unique challenges and can share tips that you won’t find in a textbook.

3. Allow Yourself Grace on Tough Days

Some days, the numbers won’t be perfect. And that’s okay. Diabetes is a lifelong journey with ups and downs. Giving yourself grace means acknowledging that mistakes happen and focusing on progress, not perfection. Self-compassion helps reduce burnout and keeps motivation alive.
